Atomic Habits

Highly recommended for those who have recently relocated abroad, whether for work or other reasons. Atomic Habits offers a chance at a fresh start, as you find yourself reconstructing everything – from your career and neighbourhood to relationships, connections, and even your sense of confidence. Amid the adjustments, you'll discover a transformation that extends beyond mere habit shifts.
My personal experience of moving to Singapore in Q3 2020 revealed the genuine impact of cultural differences, even without language barriers. I gradually recognized that by embracing new habits and discarding old ones, I not only adapted to my new life but also evolved into a version of myself that I genuinely admire and aspire to be.
I'm so fascinated by the POV Atomic Habits has shared; on what habits really are and the effective ways of changing/discarding/maintaining them (especially the Four Laws of Behaviour Change).
Think of good habits and bad habits as two faces of a coin – and you're the one flipping it. The actions you take, whether positive or negative, will lead to distinct yet equally impactful outcomes, depending on which side you land on.
The book offers a clear visual understanding, helping you realize that life changes don't necessarily demand grand gestures. Just like the power of compounding in savings or investments, significant transformation emerges from the accumulation of numerous small decisions. Starting small is the key.
Sharing some of my favourite quotes from the book:
"Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More."
"Anyone can work hard when they feel motivated. It’s the ability to keep going when work isn’t exciting that makes the difference."
"True behavior change is identity change. You might start a habit because of motivation, but the only reason you’ll stick with one is that it becomes part of your identity."
"Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress."
"Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement."
"When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running."
